SIP for your information: Something barely known is that traditional (analogue) telephony has long been replaced by digital telephony worldwide. Since the mid 1980's a massive push was made by the Telco's to replace traditional analogue exchanges with digital (computerised) exchanges, which essentially means that all of us have been making phone calls digitally for many years, we just were never told. We know... it is a simplistic statement, because it is not just the switching of lines, but also the transmission of digitalised voice (end-to-end), but still... With this intro we hope to have taken away some sceptism around Digital (or Internet) Telephony as we are all already using it. That does not take away that still some care needs to be taken in installing it on your PC, and one should be aware of some of the typicality's around VoIP. VoIP is the base principle of IP Telephony, nothing much more as Voice over Internet Protocol. VoIP defines how data communications is used for voice transport and... SIP is the principle that safeguards our conversations, it is the traffic warden for VoIP. SIP should in our opinion stand for Simple Internet Phone, but no... unfortunately it stands for Session Initiation Protocol. SIP, VoIP, H323, STUN, G711, G729, iLBC, etc... and the list never ends, specifically when you deal with technology whizz's who simply think little about if anything is practical or useable.
